Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
First impressions on the TR5: first time in the water yesterday on the 12 TR5. The wind was 5 to 13 knots. I was plaining really fast and had plenty of power all the time.
The sail has an unreal low end. As soon as i started plaining i could trim the board on the fin and play around going for angle or speed. Normally on such light stuff you go for angle and you can't really play around.
Downwind was the best feel of the day. I could rail the board and go on the fin no matter if it was 7 knots or 12...this was a huge matter when i was on pryde, when i use the 10.7 RS racing..i could go upwind but downwind i was always getting killed on this wind...the 11.8 was always too heavy for my board, so downwind was a struggle!
With the TR5 i just bagged the sail and the whole gear was lifted up off the water...very good impressions so far...
I don't want to say too much as i had only a couple of hs on the 12 yesterday. I sailed with Jimmy on his new North and some other guys on Prydes. I was clearly faster than all of them but basically because i was always on trim and they weren't...key on suck light wind conditions. Now i know why Dennis Little almost won the europeans last year in this conditions.
So far so good..! very good first impression..

Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
to Gonzalo: First congratulations of winning GP.
I also changed this year from Pryde to Maui sails and ordered 10 tr-5 and 11 tr-5 xt. Because im light weight I did not order 12m2
Have u tryd tr-5 11m2 and how is it compared to rs-racing 10,7( bigest sail i used last year) Is it necessary to have 12m2 ??
Sincerely
Jaanus

Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
My experience tought me that over 80 kg weight and good experience on Formula board the 12m sail should be one of your main sails especially with the newer boards wich are wider at their tail.
Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
Hi Jaanus,
I tried the 11 and the 10 on the past days too. I felt all this days that when using the TR5 i have a lot of power and angle compared to the 10.7 pryde that had plenty of top speed but i had to rely on my fins for power and angle.
I think that this days when fins are hard to get sometimes, having a sail that offers you plenty of power and high pointing ability is very good.
The 11 TR5 has a way better lower range than the 10.7. But the 12 is such a nice and easy sail that i think is a must have!!!!
The 10 is very powerful too.
I haven't sail that much, only three days..today we start the competition..
BR, GOnzalo.

Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
Hi guys, the event finished today.
First Day the wind was 7 to 12 knots and i took the 12
First Race i had a huge lead after two laps and it was just before the finish line that i dropped my sail on the tack. Got second..could not believe it..
Second Race i won by miles
Third race consisted on one lap only. I was leading the race but when i started the downwind i got seaweed and had to stop. As it was only one lap I couldn't come back.
2nd Day
no wind
3rd Day the wind was between 8-13 at the begining and then increased a lot during the day.
1st race won by miles, i had the 12. My speed upwind was very good but the difference was on the downwind...i could go really low with good speed.
2nd race, seemed to be same story as the first but in the last half of the downwind the wind had increased to 20 knots and i dropped my sail on the jybe..I lost a lot and finished 2nd.
3rd Race the wind increased to 25 and i took the 10. I was leading after two laps but i lost it without a chicken strap, so got 2nd again.
I am very happy on my first event with my new Maui Sails. After only 3 days of using them I manage to win a couple of races and to round first on every race at the first mark.
My feelings on the 12 was that it has a lot of power and angle abilitty both upwind and downwind.
The 10 felt very easy and soft but still powerfull..
I am stoke and looking forward to get tune on them..!
Best regards, Gonzalo.
Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
Congrats to every body who could finished the races with that strong winds on 11-12m sails, it shows that new boards and sails made big progress in shapes.
Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
who won ? Gonzo or Schurmann? I couldnt quite figure that out.
Josh
Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5

Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
Hallo Gonzalo,
would you please tell us a bit more about slalom sizes?
It seems you've rated them as powerfull sail. How about speed, stability and control?Do they tend to lift up the board nose?Another interesting question regards how they menage the light wind.
Have you had the chance to test the 8,4 and 9,2?
Thank you
Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
Hi,
The formula sails i found were a little more powerfull in a good way than the prydes,
On the slalom sails, i tried a lot the 6.3 6.6 and 7.0. I cant say much of the bigger ones because i haven't use them yet.
The three sizes i tried feel very stable and fast. A little less powerful than the pryde i would say, so i am always with a bigger size of what i use to be.
They feel very easy to me, seems that you can hold them forever, the wind range is very good.
After all this days of sailing i have a good feel that when choosing a sail for a heat i can always go big or same as the heavier guys and i wont have overpower issues. When on Pryde i had to be very careful on what sail to take, because i could get overpower pretty quick, specially at the jybes...seems that the TR5 have easier rotation and nice controlable feel when you flip the sail.
BR, Gonzalo.
Re: Gonzalo with the new Sails TR5
Howzit Guys, I thought I'd butt in with my 2 cents. I just got off the water 5 minutes ago on the 9.2 TR-5 and yesterday afternoon sailed the 8.4 and 7.6. I am pleased to say that Barry, Art and Phil once again outdid themselves and I am even more pleased to say that those guy really take written and verbal feedback and convert it into better product.
The main feeling I get on the bigger size TR-5's is a very locked in feeling where the draft stays very stable even through the gusts and the lulls. I felt like I could drive the rig through the differing winds ( its gusty and shifty where I sail here in Sal and I usually sail in the evening when it is gustier and shiftier) and I didnt have to adjust and readjust myself every time I got hit by a gust or came into a hole. You still have the "soft" feeling that Maui Sails are famous for, but now with a much more locked in and lighter feeling. I'm very excited because last year the toughest racing conditions for me were on 8.4 and 9.2 and now I'm feeling that we are gonna be extremely competitive in that size range.
I'd like to add a special note that I briefly jumped on the 7.6 and it had such a stable power zone but was extremely soft. It was a feeling that I' not sure I felt before. I only had a few runs before the wind backed off and I look forward to getting more time on the 7.6 and smaller sizes.
Aloha,
Josh
