Topic: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Hi Guys, we had some racing today. The wind stabilise kind of late so we manage to do two races only.
We sailed most of the day taking advantage of the gusts trying to tune a bit.
I score a bullet on the first one. I had a good lead at the first upwind and kind of made it longer through the race. So i felt i was going very good on the 12. Gabriel was on second with his 12 that is very happy too.
Second race i kind of had a good first upwind but i overlayed by a lot so i rounded 5th. I manage to get close and pass one guy in the downwind. On the second upwind Gabriel that was in front of me manage to pass Woijtec and i did too. We got close to Paulo that was leading. On the downwind i passed Gabriel and came close to Paulo. I came close to him but couldnt pass him so i score a 2nd. Gabriel finished 3rd. So we are very happy both of us with the new sails.
So far i am in first, second Paulon, third Gabriel.
Wojtec, Micah, Jesper, Jimmy and Wilhelm have been fighting but i dont know how they finished.
The first two practice days we sailed on the 10 and then on the 11. We were going pretty good on them..So far we have been running the sails with a bit more downhaul than spec..2 cm more i would say...so go and try yours out..!
best regards, Gonzalo.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Final results, Gonzalo is 2nd, Gabriel 3rd!
A clear win for Maui Sails I would say.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

not exactly a win, but certainly the lion's share. and mostly the demonstration of some great speed on the 12s. this is always good to know earl;y in the year. a fine tuneup for the guys.

seems this quarter century of races was really delivering this weekend. i know this is a always a fun event no matter how the wind blows, but when you can have so many good races it is well worth the trip.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Humble Barry,
Dos Reis was on North Sails and was the only one on Patrick Diethelm board. But the next North Sails racer finished in 8th. Gonzalo was on Exocet, Micah Buzianis on JP, others on Starboard, including Gabriel. So having gained 2nd and 3rd position is to my eyes a very solid meaningful result. What I see is, as for materials, the winners are very clearly PD boards and Maui Sails.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

But what about the fins?  Gonzalo was using an Ifju fin and Micah was using a Kashy fin. What about Gabe and Paulo?

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Hi Guys, i'll give you a short brief of how things went out on sat and sunday.

Saturday we did three races. The wind came in earlier and stronger. They were calling 15-20 at the last very second before getting in the water so I decided to go out on the 11 to give it a try.
Off course the wind was 15 max in flat water so not really 11 condition. I started port as i felt that the right side was favoured. It did not so i rounded really bad the first upwind, 10th i think. Far in front i could see Paulo and Gabriel fighting for it, both on 12s.
I came back to 6th.

Second Race something pretty funny happened. We were about to start, 30 seconds to go and going down the line Rick and I manage to have a nice collision. He was below me and i was passing on top and i didnt see him, so the end of my boom hit his board and i catapulted..!!! So in the air i shout Riiicccckkkk!!! NOOOOO!!!!! and before landing in the water i was already laughing of the situation of having the International Sales Manager of MAuiSails taking out one of his team riders fighting for the top spot of the event. Anyways it was my fault...so i had a bad start, rounded like in 6th and now on my 12 i manage to come back to 2nd. So it was agood come back and i felt my speed was very good.

Last race of the day, I saw Paulo not getting in the line with the 1 minute rule so i knew he was BFD. I manage to have a clean start and opened a gap on the starboard run but tacked to late. Wojtec and Paulo tacked earlier than me and made the mark so all the distance i had gained went back to them. I passed Wojtec during the race and close the gap with Paulo but i was not that worried as he was BFD, so i score a 1st there.

So far, we were tied in points with Paulo for first but the tiebraker was on my favour, so he was second and Gabriel on 3rd showind a consisstent solid performance.

LAst day
The wind came in at 1 and it looked like it was gona be one of those light races. I set my downhaul at 34.5 cm at the 12..0.5 less than normal to check if i will get a bit more power..So i had a decent start at the pin with Wojtec and Wilhelm below me. After many times of overlaying in the first upwind i decided i needed to be more accurate and stop playing it safe. So i tacked and came out with good speed. Most of the way to the mark i felt i was making it but then i got knocked a little bit but the wind came in again so i manage to make it with a good lead already at the first mark..BUT when rounding i dont know why, destiny maybe, i cached the rope of the mark and catapulted!! So that was bummer...so as i dont have an upwhaul it took me ages to pick up the sail..anyways back to 10th..i manage to come back to 4rth..and Paulo finished 3rd so now he was 1 point ahead.
I knew it was to the last race.
On the last race i pulled a little more downhaul and went back to 35..now i had clearly an edge in speed. I rounded on first with a good margin, opened the lead in the downwind and at the second rounding i was gone. When i started the last downwind i was so gone that i just went straight and jybe to go the mark. When i jybe the wind was gone and i was standing still there pumping my ass off and not being able to plane. At that point Paulo that just rounded the upwind mark saw me and jybe out to see if he would have more luck out...offcourse he did. So i got stuck there with this thought in my head..this is not my event!! So he won that one and i got 2nd. Gabriel that was on 3rd and came my way got stuck as well and lost to Wilhelm who is a specialist on that light -7-8 kts breeze...
So i ended up 2nd and Gabriel 3rd. We both felt the 12 was rocking..it was a super good warm up for the worlds too and the level was pretty high.
4rth: Wojtec, 5th Wilhelm, 6th Micah, 7th Jesper, 8th Jimmy, 9th Mathias, 10th Fernando.
and Gabriels

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Gonzalo and Gabi,

Congratulations with your results :)

I am sure that the NEW TR6 are very fast and great sails.

I do know that small mistakes can make you suffer but you learn from that.

Keep it up and I am cheering for you guys.

ciao your freestyle team mate

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

3 races already won by North and the Patrcik D board?
Can someone check for things out of the ordinary in Paolos equipment?
Or is it the Sailor that has been in perfect shape in every single race and not commiting any errors.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

He is really fast.  At the Alex C race a top pro was very nervous about racing him for the first time due to his reputation!  However, the consistent results by both Gonzalo and Gabriel who used different boards and fins at the Midwinters says more than Paulo's results as the next North Sails and PD boards were not near the top.....

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

I totally agree with Rick R.
Also let see in the next few races how he does.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Hi All,

I think Paulo's is a good racer.. no doubt about that, but it's just the guy who make less mistake can always win in the end. so let's not say bad things but just respect Paulo's win. ;)

For sure Gabriel and Gonzalo are strong in Formula and I do know that they can do very great results in the formula.
Keep your heads up Gabi and Gonzalo.. less mistake can make you 1st place.

You guys sure have the best sails.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

As Gonzo said in Exocet forums - Paolo is in very good shape and has been training hard with RSX team. I guess all the training paid off. Congrats for him!

Anyway, Gonzo and Gabriel did a good job, keeping all those big names behind them. It is a great victory for MauiSails early in the season. The only thing I don't understand is the point of not having uphaul rope? And this seems to be very popular among the PROs. Any comments on that?

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Less Drag.
But a negative in the case for Gonzalo and many other.
Imagine trying to get a 12m sail out of the water in a hurry. Yeah right,
It wont happen any time soon.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Hi Guys, from my perspective, I was out there setting marks and taking pics and video. I will post a video I made with all the top riders, going full speed, check the Calema Midwintyers updates. The Video will probably be there in the next 2 days. sorry I am so tired my eyes could not stay open last night.  Today I went to bed at 12 noon for a nap and woke up at 3. I was sick all weekend but had to make it happen no matter what finally been able to recover a little.
Anyways From what I saw, Gonzalo has incredible speed upwind, AND has angle. The best angle upwind of anyone. Paulo dos Reis is a speed monster he rips a 12.0 sail with only 7 battens. No excuses.
I see the board he has is really fast and easy to sail. But not just the board doing the deal. Paulo is fast, period. Last year he was fast as well.
The JP board will probably do well in super choppy conditions looks easy to sail but Buzzianis was working harder to keep his placings. The starboard looked like a well rounded board, and the Exocet the same. I think the Exocet is doing a good job upwind, and Gonzalo is making it work well around the course.
The most impressive starters where without question Gonzalo and Buzzianis. their timing was perfect every time. It was nice to have the best formula racers there at the event, all of them very professional. This is the first Year I feel a cohesive group of highly professional racers, in all aspects of the word.
My hats off to them

So what do they do when they drop it and do not have an uphaul? Do they waterstart (what if you are in a lull and there is not enough wind to waterstart) or is there a technique for wrestling a big sail like that up somehow?

Just curious

I think that the bigger guys can simply grab the luff sleeve and pull it up if the wind is not strong enough to waterstart.  Well, it's not that simple, of course, but it does work.

Mostly, they don't drop the sail.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Yeah, I guess dropping the sail is the slowest way! Haha!

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

I have posted now the full galleries of all divisons, as well as a you tube videos with the pros at full speed. Cool to see the sails in action

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..

Sitting here with a sore shoulder from sailing big into my 60th year and not able to type with both hands,  I'm glad these young turks are hoisting the 12's and not me.  I've been able to watersart everything up to an eleven, but it's very hard on the rotator cuff.  Grabbing the sleeve before the sail goes down completely has been the most effective recovery if one remains on the board.

Re: Calema Midwinters '10 first day..
