Topic: 490 in 9.2 TR sail

Annybody with experience with putting a 490 SRS in the TR 9.2?
Since my 7.6 TR-4 has excellent low end I'm thinking of swapping my TR-4 8.4 for a TR-? 9.2 but would like to keep the mast if suitable.

I weigh 85kg

Also would like to know if the 9.2 would be the right way to go or would it not bring anything/very little to improve on planning?
Board i use the 7.6/8.4 on is the 2008 JP76 114L the 8.4 "feels" rather big, I've tried a NP slalom 8.6 and that felt a bit lighter/smaller with better lowend/pull then my TR8.4 but i'm not a fan of the NP overall feel.

Option number two would be to swap de 7.6 for a 7.0 then i would be ok mast wise but i like the 7.6 so much....

Thanks for your input

Re: 490 in 9.2 TR sail

If you are thinking of swapping, you should try the 9.2 on the 490 on your JP and see what happens if you have the opportunity.

I would speculate that the 9.2 will get very lose on the top half and you will lose some performance.  Add the extra weight and you may not be any better off than you were with the 8.4.  Your boom may make a difference too.  If it's not carbon, then the problems with the 9.2 may be even worse.

I have both the 8.4 (TR-3) and 9.2 (TR-3, now TR-6), and there is a definite difference between the two on my formula board (the only place I use the 9.2).

On the other hand, I have a Starboard iS 111, a little smaller than the JP.  While the 8.4 works well in a steady wind, it is difficult in slogging conditions.  My 7.6 TR-4 is perfect on this board.  However, I would never think of using my 9.2 on the iS 111, just too big & heavy to manage.  I weigh 77kg.

Now that I have had the chance to use my 9.2 TR-6 XT a few times - wow, what a great sail.  The shape and smoothness of the sail looks like a Vogue model in Spandex.

Day before yesterday, I hit 26.5 knots of board speed on the 9.2 and 160 formula board in 13-17 knot breezes and felt pretty comfortable.

Re: 490 in 9.2 TR sail

ken has some good advice based on experience. i would agree about the 9.2 being too large. the mast issue is a matter of experiment since we don't normally do that. but for the medium board, you may want to keep to the 8.4.

Re: 490 in 9.2 TR sail

Changing mast is for your to test.
I was with Gonzalo last weekend in a race and he was using the 7.0m TR-6 with the 430 MauiSail mast instead of the 460 cm.
He said it is way better and softer.
He was using a mast extender and then a short mast extension.
