Topic: US Nationals day 2

Day 2 US nationals.

3 races today, just a little more wind than yesterday and still as cold, dam.

Race 5.  ?Phil?s race of the decade?. I got an ok start but for some reason nobody was around me and I saw the individual recall flag go up, so I just thought it was me (as it turns out I was clear), so I turned downwind and went back to restart at the pin end of the line. I got back there and headed out on port and of course by this time the whole fleet was ahead of me and I in the back. Somehow I got some clear air and rounded the top mark around 14th place. I could see Paulo was way out in front in first and Sherman was with him.   I took off downwind and started to pass people, I just kept going as deep as I could and riding the puffs down to the layline to jibe to the bottom mark. I knew I had picked up a few guys and I could see some of them had jibed off early. I rounded the bottom mark in 5th place and slowly but surely crept closer and closer to the guys in front.

When it came time to tack across to the layline I could actually see Paulo and Sherman now. It seemed they went over the layline a bit so I tacked before them. I rounded the top mark now in second, just got a head of Sherman. Paulo was in touch now, but still a ways in front. We both headed about the same angle downwind, until it came time to jibe, right about then, I saw Paulo take a swim. I jibed right near him and got moving to the bottom mark and rounded a few metres in front of him. I pushed to gain height and then saw Paulo tack off, so I pushed on up to the finish and scored a bullet.

Race 6. I had a great start and rounded in first, Paulo second and Sherman third. This time it was me who took a swim and Paulo got in front of me at the bottom mark. Paulo went onto to win, with me in second and Sherman in third.

Race 7. I started on Starboard while Sherman went off on port and bolted up the windward leg. Paulo and Sherman rounded together, while I was back in 4th behind Seth besse. Paulo got in front at the bottom and those two were fighting it out while Seth and I had a good battle for third and fourth. Sherman got his bullet ahead of Paulo, and I got Seth on the upwind legs to finish in third.

results now after 7 races.
Paulo 6 points
Phil 9 points
Schurmann 11 points.
Metayer 18.
Seth 22.

Re: US Nationals day 2

Race 1 on the day Phil's first downwind leg was probably the most spectacular downwind race leg sailed on San Francisco Bay this decade. I was ahead of Phil at the mark and he dove my stern absolutely lit on the XT 10.  Phil was going super deep with out any loss of speed. I say 'putting the hammer" down a lot but that was putting the sledge hammer down. Wow is just about all I could say and I had the best seat in the house to watch it.
