PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam 2014 has come to an end

4th August 2014

From the 25th - 29th July was the start of the slalom races where I started of pretty bad but got back up to finished 14th out of 56 racers.

PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam 2014

Day 1-2
I Had great board speed, good start but just couldn’t pull it all together to advance to the next rounds as I messed up my jibes and was not focusing to racing, i guess sometimes we all go thru this mental thing where your mind is just kinda wondering what’s going on. Yes I am a human being .
3 bad races in a row where did it all go wrong..? so I sat down and I rethink back for awhile I just needed to have that moment where everything becomes quite where I can find that motivation and get back to focusing. I mean 36,5 44,5 & 30,5 places is really bad i think i never had such bad results.

My brother Tonky told me, why are you jibing like that, you should jibe better. ‘what brother I have’ hahahaha, well i guess it helps.

Day 3
Just as the wind got stronger and with my confident back on, I toke it one heat at a time and push the my racing skills to advance thru each heat with solid start and board speed to advance thru out the rounds to make it 2 times in the winners final i race#4 placing 5th & race #5 where i finished 7th. This is the results I was hoping to get from day 1 but sometimes it is how it is. you got to deal with it and know how to put yourself back up.

Day 4-5
With gusty/strong wind it was some really hard core racing as the day progress to give us choppy and even swells that made it even harder to jibe and controlling the board going on the outside was scary, I made it 3 times to the losers finals and finished with a 13th 14th 15th, I said to myself, Taty you did enough, you fought enough to discard the previous bad races from day 1&2 to probably get in top 20. having this thoughts and to be able to race myself in to 2 winner finals and 3 loser finals i couldn’t be happier. To bad i couldn't get the chance to use the TRX 5.5.

End result : 14th Fuerteventura slalom
Ranked : 7th after 3 slalom events

Equipment used
Sails: MauiSails TRX: 6.3 6.6
Board: Starboard isonc 87 & 107

From 30th july - 2nd August, was the start of the freestyle, with big air moves and a lot of twisting, turning spinning from all the top freestyle guys in the world, it was just an amazing show for the spectators/crowds at the beach down in Sotavento beach Fuerteventura.

Every year the level becomes higher and Each freestyle heat was like you are sailing in a finale. Truth is i like the way the level is at this stage and this can make the sport more extreme and as the moves becomes crazier it's also a good for the sport itself.

PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam 2014

During my heats I was on MauiSails loco pro 4.4 and my Starboard flare 91.

I had some great heats and I was feeling so good with my sailing that I even invented a new Combo move: CANA BRAVA INTO CLEW FIRST SPOCK. I did this in the heat. No it wasn't a lucky one, because i had thoughts about this move in my head for a long time. Even though I finished 6th I am still happy because I prove myself that I am competitive in both Slalom and Freestyle.

Congratulations I would like to say to:
2nd Kiri NB-61
4th Amado NB-20
5th Bjorn Saragoza NB-11
6th Myself 'Taty' NB-9
13th Everon (Tonky) Frans NB-7

Bonaire a small island with all of his freestylers in the top of the freestyle world. Well, you know what makes me even more happy at this stage:
7th overall slalom
7th overall freestyle

PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam 2014

I can still improve both my results as there are still more slalom and freestyle events to go. But it's a good start and I am feeling good and incontrol

What's next?

Back to bonaire for a 2 weeks slalom training and some fitness then I am back on the plane to the 4th slalom world cup in Turkey Alacati.

All the best to you guys,
Taty Frans
