Firstly I would be looking seriously if you are going to do any formula racing before making the decision, as things are a whole lot different in formula. E.g completely different technique slalom etc. For formula it is all about working your technique to point high and fast and deep off the wind.

I have a slalom background and still prefer to slalom sail, though most of our racing here is formula biased, so I got into formula. I always found the best way to go fast in slalom was to train with a small sail and work on technique to get up on the plane and stay on the plane, rather then just go for a load of power and just hook in and cruise. This taught me a lot about tuning getting my weight off the board and into the rig which now helps in my formula sailing.

Using a slalom technique on a formula board would mean you would be reaching a lot and you do not want to be doing to much of that on a modern day formula kit, believe me :) An older formula board such as a 159 etc would be ok, but the new wide boards are designed for extreme angles up and down wind.

So, my recommendation would be to stay on a slalom kit for slalom training and if you are going to do any formula racing seriously, then treat that separately and as micah said go for an 11m. If you are just wanting to play around and get into formula or you are very new to handling bigger sails, the 10m would be a way to go. If you are going to stay racing slalom, then with your weight and the 117w you got even go to a 9m and that should get you planing in very light winds anyway. A formula board will generally plane in around 7 knots, and I can get planing on my 8.4m slalom kit in 10 and I am 88kg.

We have quite a few light guys around 75kg who generally use 11m as their biggest sail and have a 10m they jump to as soon as the wind hits 15knots etc.

I found the new sails a big step up from last year. The stability and sail range are most noticeable. The sails where already fast last year, but with the added stability I found I could keep the power down in stronger winds. For example we had patches of the course where we where sailing in 12-14 knots and then 20 knots and I was still able to hold the 12m comfortably and retain speed.

I found the 12m to work perfectly well in winds up to 15 knots before going to the 11m. The specs on the sail are spot on also. Just roll out and rig to spec and you will be competitive.

The 11m is an absolute rocket this year also. The 11m is probably our most used sail here in Aus. With the nature of the conditions we have in racing here, we needed a sail that has a good range in this size. I used the 11m on the second day in all 4 races in winds from 15 knots to 25+. Although I should have been on the 10m, the wind filled in from out of nowhere in the last 2 races and caught me out. It was a good test to see the range though, and whilst I was very overpowered, I was still able to hold it down, and stay with the front pack. Remi however used the 10m in the last 2 races and had some good speed and control which equaled good results.

I had many bad starts this regatta (not used to so many competitors on a start line :) but it was a great feeling to know I was able to get back into the top places with my speed. Remi also had great speed to do the same. These sails are definitely going fast!

Ended up 5th overall/2nd Australian with Remi in 8th overall/5th Australian.

Hopefully we can pull it altogether and get some good results in the main competition in 2 days time!

If you are an experienced slalom sailor and already sail wide slalom boards and 8+ meter sails, go with the 11.0. Yeah the first ride may feel a bit awkward, but after a few you will enjoy sailing the formula gear and being able to really cruise around your sailing area both upwind and down vs the BAF on the slalom gear. An 11 will minimize the overlap with your slalom gear and maximize your water time!
