Phil McGain, AUS-7
Phil McGain former Professional Course Racing World Champion (1989) grew up on the foreshores of Sydney Harbour and was sailing at the age of 9.  At 15 he discovered windsurfing and soon made his way up through the local fleets, then onto State championships and by 19 was already multiple Australian Champion. Phil competed in the windsurfing class and Open Class from 1979 to 1983, but soon realized that funboard (shortboard) was where the action was.

In 1986 McGain competed in the $100,000 Guam Cocos Cup in slalom and Course Racing, which would prove the turning point in his professional career.  Phil won this event and pocketed $10,000 in cash, which would enable him to move into a full time professional career on the PBA world tour.  By 1988 he was living on Maui with the rest of top pro’s and competing on the World Tour.

Phil competed fulltime on the Professional tour from 1985 to 2005, while finishing in the top 5 overall and capping his hard work and dedication off with a World Title in Course Racing in 1989. Phil would go on to win multiple Australian and US National Championships in Slalom, Formula and Course Racing.

As well as being a full time professional Phil served on the Professional Windsurfers Assocation Board of Directors from 1990 to 2005 and was President/chairman for 12 of those years. Phil continues to serve as Vice President of the PWA.

Now part owner and President of Mauisails continue’s to live his dream on Maui and competes in a select number of events throughout the year. Phil spends most of his time leading the research and development for Maui Sails and working along side Legendary Sail Maker Barry Spanier supplying the World Market with winning sail designs and the best boom and mast products to enhance their performance.
