Maui Turns it on again

16th July 2012

The windiest Maui Race series race took place this past weekend with all the heavy hitters battling for the top places. Trade winds kicked in early Saturday morning with winds picking up over 30 knots as the first heats got under way around 11:30am.

The windiest Maui Race series

The pro’s had two fleets to run and as usual all the big players made it into the A group, including MauiSails Micah Buzianis and Phil McGain. The first heat of the Pro was won by Pieter Bijl with Phil in second and Micah in third. The next heat McGain took off from the start and lead all the way with Bijl in second this time, however Micah got caught up at the first mark and came in in fourth place. The final heat of the pro fleet was a do or die affair, but it was the cool head of McGain that prevailed, getting a flying start at the pin and driving his 6.3 tr8 with precision around the windy course taking first place and winning the Pro division, Pieter Bijl ended up second and Micah in third.

Todd MacFarlane dominated the 60 and over division scoring 2 firsts a second and a fifth place, with Greg Thomas in second and the newly converted to MauiSails Szabolcs Maguranyi in third place.

Mike Yasak was perfect again winning his division mens 50-59, with all bullets. Tamara Bockius also continued her winning form scoring 3 firsts and a second to win the competitive womens fleet.

In the afternoon races Micah Buzianis came back with avengeance to dominate the mens 40-49 division winning all this heats, while McGain put in another good performance settling for second place ahead of Peter Slate.

Another notables for the day…. Sailor Bockius winning in the Menehune division and her Dad Sam placing third in the semi pro, making it a family day on the race course.
