5th at the PWA worldcup Costa Teguise 2010

6th July 2010

Xenia Kessler D-211 reports from event on Lanzarote.

PWA Freestyle Worldcup in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote is now over. The wind has been really light this time, which I think was a surprise for everyone, as the wind was super super strong last year, and we could run heats from early morning till late afternoon. This year though, was completely different, with just enough wind to do a mens single and almost a full womens double. I’m super happy we had enough wind to finish the competition.

The last day we were all stand-by the whole day, because we wanted to finish the mens and womens double if possible. Luckily the wind suddenly picked up, and after like 5 hours of waiting on the beach I jumped in my wetsuit, fixed the yellow streamer in my sail, and sat my watch for the heat. Prrrr…. I got nervous. One chance. I didn’t know who I was going to be against yet, as Arrianne and Olya had to compete each other, and the one who passed would have to meet me in next round. I sat on the beach for a while, concentrated on my heat. I really wanted to do better this time, no matter who you are against, it is always a competition with yourself. Soon it was me. And I knew I would only have this chance to show a bit of what I’ve got. I went out, super upwind, just laying a bit in the water before it was our turn. I saw Olya showing up, and I knew she’d passed Arrianne then. I didn’t sail a super good heat compared to what I wanted, so I wasn’t sure at all if I passed or not when I went to the beach. We went to the elimination ladder, and was just waiting and waiting for the result to come up. I got so happy when I finally heard in the walkies that “the Danish girl passed the heat”. YEA! SO cool! This was my first winning of a PWA heat! I was really happy about it. And then, “your next heat is in 3 minutes, don’t worry about the steamer I’ll tell you haven’t got any”, no steamer, no timer on the watch, I just went straight upwind upwind upwind. I didn’t manage to go all the way upwind, before my heat actually started. And I could only tell that the heat had begun because Nayra was doing her first move. But I tried not to get stressed from any of these things. I sailed a pretty okay heat this time. And I passed this heat as well. Yes ! :) I had to sail against Junko next up. The wind was getting light, and we were both fighting to get the tricks. I only nailed a few tricks, and off course I could feel the previous heats in my body, but I wasn’t really like tired, as I got an energy boost from the winnings :) Junko won the heat, but rumors says it was pretty close, I am super happy about that. And I am super happy that I got the chance to work my way up in the double elimination and finish 5th at this second PWA competition for me.
