McGain Places second in the Masters at the Aloha

9th November 2006

McGain Places second in the Masters at the Aloha 2006The twenty first Aloha Classic kicked off this past Monday with more than 140 competitors from over thirty countries. Tuesday saw the Masters division commence with three meter waves and a solid 20-25 knots of Trades blowing.

The Masters division was stacked with talent right through the bracket. Keith Teboul, Drew farrior, Josh Stone and Kai Katchadorian were going to be the ones to beat.
Most of the heats were really close, with split decisions on the last few heats close to the finals.

Phil, using the new Legend 5.0, managed to push his way through all his heats and into the final against Josh Stone. His strategy for the day was to get the set waves, and ride them to the end. Patience was the key because there weren't a lot of sets, but when they came it was inportant to be on them to get the high scores.

In the final, Josh threw some big jumps, which McGain couldn't quite match, but he scored high on the wave riding and ended up with a few big forwards and table tops. Josh ended up the winner of the final, but McGain put in another well rounded performance. Keith Teboul placed third, while Kai Katchadorian came in fourth place.

McGain had a few comments about the day: “It was an excellent day for windsurfing on Maui. Just to have all the sailors at the beach and having a good time is really good for the sport. I had a lot of confidence using the new Legend 5.0. Power on, power off, whenever you want. Going out is a dream, and working back upwind is all about sail efficiency. Then in the air, it's all control. Plus being in good shape and knowing Hookipa like the back of my hand. It's good to get a nice payback at Hookipa after putting my head down and charging forward in the sport for 25 years. I always tell myself that you have to make alot of deposits before you get to make a withdrawal. I guess my account overflowed”.

Congrats to Phil for a great job well done.
